What Is an Emergency Evacuation Plan?

Organizations are responsible for every person’s safety. Evacuation business plans are not only ideas that few or most of the organizations are implementing but is required by law to ensure the safety of the people in the organization or in a facility.

An emergency evacuation plan is a systematic layout of how one can safely get out of a facility when an emergency occurs. This is somehow like an escape route in case of fire or earthquakes happening in the area. Because emergency may happen anytime, it is important to be prepared for the worst.

Importance of Having an Emergency Plan

Aside from work plans, strategic plans and action plans, emergency plan is also one important procedure an organization should be planning for, even before business operations starts.

An emergency plan is important because there are events that may harm or endanger one’s life. It is important to be ready even if nothing bad happens than not being ready when something bad happens. Emergency plan guides us during times of emergency and eliminate other harmful conditions that would possibly arise. Emergency evacuation plans creates awareness to all the people that safety should always be prioritized.

How to make an Emergency Evacuation Plan and Response

Evacuation plans are crucial when an emergency situation strikes, so a disorganized plan would lead to confusion, damage and a high risk of death. It is also vital for people to know how to respond when emergencies occur. Let’s take the plan and response one by one.

Evacuation Plan

Plans should be made not only in school, hotels or other facilities but also in businesses. Evacuation work plans differ for every facility but here are the elements that all organization would need to consider:

  • Situations that calls for an evacuation and how to alert people in an emergency situation.
  • The best location to take shelter in case of the emergency situation.
  • Clear instructions or commands that a designated person in the organization is authorized to order in case of the evacuation.
  • Specific procedures including exit routes and where to they are located.
  • Equipment made specially for emergency situations to protect people from potential hazards, falling objects or fire.
  • Signals or sounds that would notify and instruct the people in the organization to evacuate.
  • System for accounting people in making sure that nobody is left behind or missing.

Response Plan:

When there is an emergency it is important to have all the necessary resources needed during at that time and after disaster happens. Emergency response plan is the organization of resources as well as its coordination and direction. What should be included in an emergency response plan?

  • A response plan must assess or evaluate the possible risk plan and scenarios to determine the resources needed.
  • Response plan must include where resources for emergency situations are located and how resources should be distributed.
  • Lastly, a response plan must include the resources prepared after the emergency have taken place such as medical kits and food.

What Is an Emergency Operation Plan?

To be ready when calamities strikes or when any emergency situation arises, management prepares an emergency operation plan that would prepare everyone in the organization.

An emergency operation plan is a structure and a process in which an organization use in response to an emergency situation and how to recover from that emergency. It is a strategic plan in preventing emergencies to happen, what to do when it occurs, how to react to the situation and what to do after and how to recover from that situation.

What to Include in an Emergency Action Plan

Emergency action plans should not be kept but should be distributed to the whole organization and must be available at all times.

In writing an emergency action plan, a list of all the location of important utilities, exits and other facilities should be present and if possible, shown as a picture with directions. Action plans should be detailed and should also be practiced to prepare everyone before emergencies actually happens. Action plans must contain the location where people can access equipment made for these situations and where to find the safest place.

What Is a Workplace Emergency Plan?

No one can tell when an emergency can strike in the workplace. It can be caused by calamities, floods, earthquakes, fires, toxic or chemical spills, explosions and many more. To prepare for the worst, emergency plans are mandated by law, not only in schools, malls, hotels but also in the workplace.

The workplace is considered a second home by people spending most of their day (or night) working. As an employer, the employees making up their organization is their responsibility. It is the safety of everyone in the workplace that’s important. Management plans includes the workplace’s emergency operation, action and evacuation plan. What is this plan?

Workplace emergency plan is the best way to prepare everyone on how they should act in an emergency, what they should do and where to go. Workplace emergency plan should also be discussed within the workplace. It is best when management assign people to lead specially with a large number of employees. This emergency plan is highly recommended to be practiced for a period of time so that employees would be more prepared. In case emergency happens, emergency plans would help in the recovery of the whole organization.
