Keep in mind that was in 1841. Let us fast forward to 1957 where we proceed to our next film about racism: The Butler. This movie tells the story of how one man grew up in poverty and made a living for himself by eventually becoming a butler to Dwight D. Eisenhower’s administration.

In 1961, Louis (the butler’s son) and other freedom riders were attacked by the Ku Klux Klan rallying the people saying that black people are not welcomed and that they should head home. Two years later, he joins the Birmingham Children’s Crusade but was overwhelmed by the police, their dogs, and their water cannons.

Just after President Kennedy proposed the Civil Rights Act Movement of 1964 based on what transpired from the Birmingham Children’s Crusade, he was assassinated and which made his successor, Lyndon B. Johnson, enact the said legislation. It was during the Johnson administration that the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was implemented. In the part of Cecil, he does not only receive a lower salary than that of white workers but is also unable to advance his career which leads to a confrontation between him and his supervisor. With President Ronald Reagan’s support, Cecil prevails and is invited to dinner by the family. Cecil becomes uncomfortable with the class divisions in the White House. After witnessing Reagan’s refusal to support economic sanctions against Apartheid South Africa, Cecil resigns and later realizes that his son’s actions are deemed heroic as he always stood up for what is right and just while he always repressed himself to always sticking to the law which made him blind to reality. Cecil then knew the feeling of pride and joy when he saw President Obama being inaugurated as the 44th President of the United States of America (P.O.T.U.S.). It is important to understand that racism and sexism are still present, no matter how much people want to deny it. It is understandable that there are homophobics or conventional type of people who do not see eye to eye with the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) community. Just because they are neither a male or female anymore does not mean they do not deserve the same respect as ordinary people do. They are still human after all. General Non-Discrimination Policy Tips

  1. Mention that any sort of discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex (e.g. which includes pregnancy, sexual orientation, or gender identity), national origin, disability, age or genetic information (such as family medical history) is illegal and will not be tolerated.
