School Safety Plan

Plan

Schools should fuel a child’s imagination, not violence. Kids should shoot each other a  smile, not fatal bullets from guns. It’s ironic how schools—which are supposed to be a safe space for students, are currently one of the places where violence and crime rates are towering. A lot of innocent people died on school grounds, especially in the United States. A statistic from CNN revealed that in 10 years, there were at least 177 school shootings in America. In these school shootings, 114 died, and 242 were injured. With all the violence taking place, it’s time to take action. Start by developing a school safety plan.

What Is a School Safety Plan?

A school safety plan is a plan that calculates all the possible hazards and threats in a school setting. This plan will help schools in minimizing and avoiding danger. Also, it will provide ways on how to respond to emergencies at school. These dangerous incidents could range from fire, accidents, intruders, natural calamities, weather events, and other treats. If done successfully, this plan would protect not only the students but also the staff in a school.

How to Keep Your School Secured

The safety of your staff and the students should be your topmost priority. The life of multiple people will depend on how well you developed your school safety plan. Aside from developing a safety plan, there are a lot of actions and rules to implement to keep your school safe. Follow these steps to make the staff and the students feel secured while they are under the institution’s roof.

1. Keep Your Security and Safety Plan Updated

If your safety plan is from 10 years ago, toss it away. As time passes by, note that other incidents may happen in your school. You need to regularly update your safety policies and make considerations for different situations. For example, if there are recurring issues of an intruder in different schools, you must tighten your security services and measures. In this situation, you can designate a single entrance and be stricter in your visitor policy. Conducting background checks to suspicious people before letting them in could also help in increasing security. Update your plan regarding the most relevant school issues that may put the lives of the students at risk.

2. Make Your Policies Known

No matter how good your safety policies are, if the people in your school are not aware of them, they will still be ineffective. Safety policies should be posted in places where everyone can see it. It should be in the entrance and even in each classroom. Every teacher should also be aware of these policies, and it should be their obligation to ensure that the students and their parents fully understand these rules.

3. Provide Safety Trainings and Seminars

Teachers serve as the students’ guardians in the school environment. And from time to time, they would be faced with life-threatening situations. For them to know how to handle these situations, conduct a regular safety training sessions and seminars in your school. Bear in mind that these activities should not be exclusive to the teachers only; these should also be available to the students and the parents. You should always raise safety awareness.

4. Manage Internal Violence

Threats do not only come from outside the school. Different forms of violence also take place inside the school. According to UNICEF, a horrifying number of 150 million students admitted they experienced bullying. Bullying is characterized as unwanted aggressive behavior. It is the most prevalent form of violence in schools nowadays. This act puts the students’ physical health and mental health at risk. Nevertheless, bullying doesn’t only happen between students. Some teachers also bully their students and vice versa. Stop the violence inside the school. Protect the people in your school from both external and internal threats.

5. Prepare a Dependable Emergency Response Plan

Calamities and accidents happen without warning. That is why everyone should always be prepared. Your emergency plan should include all the possible emergencies and written procedures on how to respond to these situations. Schools should conduct monthly drills to keep everyone reminded. You might think that doing this is a great inconvenience, but one can never be too safe. Remember, if you are prepared, you are safe.

What are the criteria for school safety?

There are four phases in the criteria of emergency management: prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery. Prevention refers to what the school can do to reduce the risks. You can measure the preparedness of the school through their plans, especially in worst-case scenarios. The response is all about the steps to take during an emergency or crisis. Lastly, the recovery deals with how to restore the process of teaching and learning after the threatening event.

What is a preschool safety plan?

Managing the safety of preschool children is difficult because these students are more vulnerable to hazards and risks. They can pose a threat to each other and themselves. A preschool safety plan is a comprehensive plan which ensures the safety of the children. This plan provides instructions on the prevention, assessment, preparation, response, and recovery to a crisis. This plan often includes making sure that there are no pointy objects in the environment and mounting the TVs and whiteboards on the wall.

What is an office safety plan?

Even if working people are old enough to protect themselves, injuries, accidents, and other incidents still occur in the workplace. An office safety plan identifies all the possible health and physical hazards of a work environment. It is an action plan which provides procedures for prevention and gives steps on how to respond when accidents occur. Offices often hand out manuals of their safety plan.

The safety of the students doesn’t solely depend on your safety plan. It also depends on how disciplined they are. The students should follow the rules that you implemented. Keeping the school secured can’t be done by one individual only; it should be a team effort. Everybody should go hand-in-hand in reaching this common goal. To provide the students with a safe space to grow and develop, you should be able to make them feel secured.
