At the end of every work shift, every employee is tasked to submit a shift report. This is often applied mostly to employees who observe a work from home set-up and even employees who are required to take turns at work. What is A Shift Report?
Shift reports contain specific information about the occurrences that take place during the time of your work shift. This is to help your employer assess if tasks have been completed or not. The employers can even ask for clarifications based on the given details presented in your report.
What are the Contents of your Shift Report?
The content of an employee’s shift report may depend on what field he or she is assigned. If the employee is in the manufacturing company or anything that involves business, the shift report may contain details about the stocks. If the employee is assigned in the medical field, then they are going to supply information regarding the condition of their patients and so on.
But this is the most common format when making shift reports:
- Header – the header is placed in the upper right portion of the paper together with the date of when the report was made. Don’t forget to put your full name and the name of the department that you belong to.
- Accomplishments – write the tasks that you have accomplished during the day. This should be placed in a bullet form.
- Planned tasks – in this section, you are going to put what needs to be done for the next day, next week or even next month. You may also put possible problems that could possibly arise that could delay the completion of your tasks. These are called “challenges”.
- Issues and comments – you often receive a complaint from your employer. You also have the responsibility to point out the issues and provide comments on what you think should be done.
- Proofread your report – check your report for some misspelled words or wrong sentence construction.
You may send your shift report to your boss through a company email or submit a hard copy.

Disadvantages of Shift Report
- If the shift report will continually provide details that are not necessary, it might be ignored.
- Shift reports can also be manipulated or tampered.
- If the quality of report is different from others, it might be difficult for the receiver to understand the entirety of it.
