Teaching Children How to Tell Time
There are some children who find it hard to understand the importance of usage of time. That is why you have to make sure that you are going to do a careful step-by-step process so that they will not become overwhelmed when you teach them the concepts of time.
Even before teaching them how to tell time, you have to make them master the numbers first. You only need to teach the numbers one to 60, as there are 60 seconds in a minute, 60 seconds in an hour, and 24 hours in a day.
Introduce to them the clock, specifically its basic parts and functions. Make sure you indicate the key difference between the clock’s long hand, short hand, and fast hand. The long hand indicates the minute, the short hand indicates the hour, and the short hand indicates the seconds. Also, the clock’s hands only move to the right in a circular manner (it is where the word “clockwise” was born). When teaching time, start with the easy ones such as 3 o’clock, 6 o’clock, 9 o’clock, and 12 o’clock. Then you can move to minutes and seconds once the child has already mastered reading the hours in a clock.
