Re: Case No. 12345678 – Traffic Violation

Dear Judge Thompson,

I am writing this letter concerning the traffic violation case No. 12345678, where I am cited for a speeding offense on January 15, 2024, on Highway 2, near Lincoln, NE. I wish to present my account of the events and respectfully request the court’s consideration for a reduction in the penalty due to mitigating circumstances.

I am a lifelong resident of Lincoln, NE, and a teacher at Lincoln High School for the past ten years. I have always strived to uphold the law and contribute positively to our community. This incident marks my first traffic violation in over twenty years of driving.

On the day of the alleged violation, I was driving from a school event back to Lincoln. I acknowledge that my speed exceeded the posted limit; however, it was unintentional and occurred under stressful circumstances. I was attending to a medical emergency involving my elderly mother, who was in the vehicle with me at the time. She was experiencing severe distress, and I was attempting to reach medical assistance as quickly as possible.

Attached to this letter, you will find a medical report from Lincoln General Hospital, documenting my mother’s condition and the necessity of urgent care on that day. I believe this situation constitutes a mitigating circumstance, and while I understand the importance of adhering to speed limits, my primary concern was ensuring the well-being of my mother.

I deeply regret any disregard for traffic laws this incident may imply and have taken measures to ensure it does not happen again, including enrolling in a defensive driving course. I trust this letter provides a clearer understanding of my actions on January 15 and respectfully request the court to consider the mitigating circumstances when determining the penalty.

Thank you for considering my statement. I am committed to upholding the law and am prepared to accept responsibility for my actions. However, I kindly ask for leniency based on the context of this incident.

Sincerely,

[Signature if sending a hard copy]
Shari Bernard
