Unusual Incident Report

On the evening of April 4, 2024, at approximately 8:30 PM, an unusual incident occurred within the premises of Greenwood Park, located at 452 Westwood Drive, Lakeside City, LC. The incident involved an unexpected wildlife encounter involving a small bear cub wandering into a populated area of the park during a family picnic event.

Park visitors immediately notified the park ranger station upon sighting the bear cub near the picnic tables and playground area. The park’s wildlife management team, along with local animal control officers, was promptly dispatched to the location to assess the situation and ensure the safety of park visitors.

The area was quickly cordoned off to prevent the bear cub from approaching populated areas and to minimize the risk of a potential encounter with park visitors. Using non-lethal tranquilizers, the wildlife management team was able to safely sedate the bear cub without harm.

A subsequent investigation revealed that the bear cub had likely wandered away from its habitat in the nearby forest, possibly in search of food. No mother bear or additional cubs were found in the vicinity, leading to the assumption that the cub had become separated from its family.

The bear cub was transported to a local wildlife rehabilitation center for a health assessment and observation. Efforts were initiated to locate the cub’s mother in the surrounding forest areas, with the goal of safely reintroducing the cub to its natural habitat.

In response to this incident, Greenwood Park officials have initiated a review of the park’s wildlife management practices and public safety protocols. Additional signage warning of potential wildlife encounters has been placed at all park entrances and key locations throughout the park. Park staff and visitors are being educated on how to react safely and responsibly if wildlife is encountered.

This unusual incident report will be filed with the Lakeside City Wildlife Management Office and will serve as a reference for improving wildlife management and public safety measures within Greenwood Park.
