Completing an internship is one of the major milestones that you have to accomplish when you are paving your way toward the completion of your education. An internship is a decisive step in your education wherein you will be able to apply all the knowledge and skills that you have learned in college.

In order for your professors or instructors that you have indeed applied your learnings and skills during your internship, they would be needing a proof of it. An internship report is one of the documents where they would be looking into to know whether you have or have not applied what you have learned in college.

There are other purposes of internship reports aside from what has been aforementioned and you will be able to learn the rest further in this article.

Importance of Writing a Well-written Internship Report

Having to write an internship report is actually a mark of the conclusion of an internship. Through writing an internship report, you will be able to summarize all of the personal and the business-related experiences and even the achievements you’ve had while being an intern.

Most universities require their students to provide an internship report at the end of their internship. This is how students will be graded and given with school credits. For a student like you to be given with a high grade, you must ensure that you have written an internship report that has been well-written and concise. Your internship reports should also be able to effectively narrate the experiences that you have and make sure that these experiences are also something that is of relevance to your degree.

Before you would start writing your internship report, you have to make sure that you have already carefully studied and examined the main goals or objectives of the company that you have interned it as well as its position is in the field. This is to ensure that you will be able to write an internship report that is informative and not just being taken for granted. This also means that you have written a well-written internship report. Aside from that, a well-written internship report also means that it contains the major chapters and major components that make the description and evaluation of each activity and processes easier and this also means that it will be convenient to read by your instructors or professors.

The Three Major Components of an Internship Report

Writing internship reports is also one way of practicing your writing skills and you might have already known the important role played by written communication in the workplace. Having an excellently written communication skill proves your ability to properly communicate with other people and that will help you in the bigger picture that could be the career path that you are to take later on.

Should you want to make a well-written internship report, you must ensure that you have already included the three important components that a well-written internship report must always contain:

  • A well-written internship report must have a clear outline and a basic information regarding the company where you had an internship in.
  • A well-written internship report must have a clear, brief, but informative summary of all the tasks and work that you have accomplished all throughout the duration of your internship period. This is where you should also be able to show, if applicable, the outputs you have made during your internship period.
  • A well-written internship report must never miss including the specific aspects of your internship journey that could be relevant and helpful in your field and to your career later on.

While all of these three components are equally important, the first two components can be brief and can be something that you can consider as the introduction part of your internship report. The third component, however, is where your internship report should be directing the spotlight, the focus, or the highlight.

This is also the component of your internship report that is considered as the analytic component; this is because you are not only to gather information about it like you would gather information for the first component of your internship report and leave it as it is, but you are also going to interpret it. This is how you are going to develop both of your written and analytical skills. This is also how you are going to learn how to be able to present ideas and information with clarity and order.

The Four Major Chapters of an Internship Report

Let us take a closer look at the four major chapters of an internship report where you are going to apply the three major components of an internship report that has been mentioned above:

Summary of the facts

For this chapter of your internship report, this is where you should be able to give the reader a profile of the company you have worked in as an intern. Just keep it brief since too many details will just bore your readers out.

The details you should include are the type of business or the industry it is in, its number of employees, its geographic location or office location, and what the business does.

To elaborate on the part where you would include about “what the business does,” you may tell about the image of the business and what is its position in the industry it is found under.

Right after its general information, you would then have to mention the specifics or the details about what division or department you worked in or assigned to. This is where you should place the organization chart of the division or department.

Have this chapter for at last two to three pages. Too much of it will bore out your readers as they know that the highlight of your internship report is found on the part where you are able to narrate your experiences, learning, and achievements during your internship period.

Narrative

This chapter is where you will narrate about what you have done and what you have learned throughout your internship period. You have the option to narrate it chronologically or according to the kinds and types of tasks that you were able to perform.
You have to narrate exactly what happened and what you did on each of the tasks that you perform. This is how your professors or instructors will be able to assess whether you have or have not done any work at all.

By narrating exactly what happened during the tasks during your internship, you have to write down and describe each of the duties or chores that you have done or that were asked of you. You also have to include the tasks that you have done that are not directly related to your field. But as you mention the tasks you have done that are related to your field, you would also then have to mention how it makes it related to your field; however, do not go overboard in narrating how it is related to your field since you will expound and discuss on this more in the next chapter.

But do no go overboard in mentioning every single detail of what happened during your internship periods such as where you have eaten your lunch and what you have eaten for lunch, because seriously, just include what happened during the working hours and anything that is related and relevant to your field.

Self-Evaluation

If you think that the heart of the internship report is the narrative report, then you are mistaken because it is the chapter where you are to evaluate your own self and your performance that is the heart of your entire internship report. This chapter is where your professor or instructor will be basing upon on when they would be finally grading you.

So before you get into writing, you have to make sure that you have reflected well and enough in order to generate a well-thought-out self-evaluation. You may reflect on what you have learned for your own personal development. You may also discuss about how people at the workplace had learned from you since it is not really that impossible to happen.

By having effectively evaluated yourself and of your performance, you just don’t focus on the good things that happened but you also have to take into account the bad ones and make a relevant constructive criticism out of it. It is through your mistakes that you will be able to learn genuine learning since, as the old adage goes, “the best teacher is experience.”

Do not take self-evaluation for granted by simply writing in generalized contents. Give you self-evaluation some meat such as including your insights, analysis, and reflections you have gained from your internship period.

Appendix

This is the chapter of your internship report where you are to include all or maybe just samples of the outputs you have made during your internship period.

Make sure that you are able to give your evaluators variety of pieces of your output so that it will show that you are flexible enough to do whatever task that will be entrusted to you.

Depending on what industry you are in, among the outputs you may include in this chapter are your published news or feature reports, your layout design, copy of advertisements you have made, scripts and formal letters you have written, or you can even include a CD or a flash drive where you are going to place in the video or music clips that you have made during your internship. Keep in mind that whatever you place in your appendix determines the kind of internship that you had.

In case you have no outputs (as there are some jobs that are not output based), you may explain so on your narrative report.

The experience of being an intern may only happen once in your life. Aside from the fact that an internship report is a school requirement, you can also grab this opportunity where you will be able to document one of either the best or the worst moments that happened in your life that you can happily look back as you would grow.
