We often refer to managers and supervisors interchangeably, mainly because they seem to possess similar job roles. This is true, to an extent that is.
Take this for example: supervisors are apparent at fast food restaurants. They aren’t responsible for taking our orders and preparing them, but they’re often called to correct mistakes made by the rest of the restaurant’s staff.
You see, supervisors play significant roles in the operations of a business plan, but their job role is only limited to the company’s internal operations. This is because every company has managers who hold more crucial responsibilities than a supervisor.
The Difference Between Managerial and Supervisory Experience
From an outside point of view, we see managers and supervisors as leaders, in which managers play a more superior role than the latter. In a way, they are similar. But the scope statement of a supervisory role isn’t as wide as that of a managerial.
- In the decision-making process of a company plan, managers are held responsible for making decisions that may greatly impact an organization. They are involved in planning, organizing, and controlling processes in order for the defined objective statement to be met. The decision made should have the company’s best interest in mind.
- On the other hand, supervisors are assigned to handle day-to-day operations in terms of staffing, scheduling, and making a necessary corrective action plan. Although managers may also serve the same statement of purpose, supervisors are still hired so that the given responsibilities may be focused on. This is mainly because supervisors focus on the internal aspects while managers concentrate on the external factors of a business.
What Is the Job of a Supervisor?
Supervisors take all kinds of roles when it comes to leadership. They are considered to be coaches, mentors, and advocates for a company’s employees. They are responsible in the staffing, training, and development of these personnel. Through proper employee guidance, supervisors work hard to ensure customer satisfaction. Knowing all this, it’s safe to say that a supervisor is the superman of a workforce.
Entry and Mid-level Management Job Titles And Roles
- Supervisor
Supervisory roles are often given for jobs about first level management. This is to start out small, in which an individual is responsible for leading a small group in terms of work assignments and minor problem-solving. - Project Manager
They are responsible for project management. This would include the quality management for a given project agenda, as well as the budget needed to attain the desired smart goals. - Manager
This may refer to managers that supervise employees or those that manage the supervisors, this would solely depend on the size of the company they are working for. Second-level managers often report to senior managers, directors, or even company owners. - Senior Manager
Not all companies have senior managers but for those that do, individuals of this management level play the same role as managers. However, they hold more responsibility in terms of financial authority. - General Manager
These are the individuals that hold higher authority than those that have been mentioned. They also supervise managers of different functions of a company.
